Aqua Team Update

Posted on 25th March 2010 by oobioma in Community and Information - Tags: , , ,

Do you know what an estuary is ? It is a body of water made up of the combination of fresh water and salt water. Last Saturday, March 13, 2010 the Aqua Team went canoeing in the bay. While they were out canoeing they got to see the animals in the wetlands environment.  According to a great number of the aqua team members it was a lot of fun. For members for whom it was the first time canoeing it was hard in the beginning but  in the end it got easier as they got used to it. There were a total of three people per canoe the person in the back of the canoe was called the captain because  they were in controll of the canoe. The other two people in the canoe simply just had to row the canoe. The animals that the group saw were crabs, ducks, fish, great egrets, etc. In addition, the students are currently in the process of creating a mural. It will be located at El Sobrante Public Library. The students have designed this mural working with a professional muralist named Eduardo Pueda. For more info stay tuned at rhs newswire.net

¡REWARD!

Posted on 24th March 2010 by scalderon in Uncategorized

On Thursday, March 18, Mr. Sherwood’s laptop computer and his Vietnam yearbook were stolen from Room 300.

He would like to get both items back and is willing to offer a reward and ask no questions.

The computer contains all of his work at RHS and its loss makes it difficult for him to provide a service to students.

The yearbook has no cash value and cannot be replaced. It is, however, of great sentimental value to Mr. Sherwood as it contains the photographs of those with whom he served.

The items or information leading to their return can be provided directly to Mr. Sherwood, Coach D, Charles, Mama Rose, or anyone in the main office.

Those Eyes

Posted on 24th March 2010 by jrojas in Poetry

Who is that person with the beautiful eyes,
that person I once knew, that would always say I love you with just the look,
but would never show no emotion,
as quiet as a lion,
but weak as a cub,
would do wrong and never look back to who he hurt,
years past by grew darker and cold with a broken heart,
darker and darker the person with the beautiful eyes started to fade away to a dream he always wanted,
he never opened his mind to reality,
to a better place it would have been,
never cherishing and never able to let go of the past,
crying like a gloomy rainy day one day its going to be a bright sunny day,
but for now you’re gone in a dream you always wanted,
as dark as your dream and as dark as your soul you’re better off for now, man with those beautiful eyes.

Aqua Team

There are many after school programs at Richmond High School (RHS) in which students engage in in order to help their community. One of these that many students have shown great interest for is the Aqua Team. When most people first hear about the program they thinks it is some sort of swim team, but it is not, in contrary it is a youth group that aims to learn more about the environment. This year, according to Chiara Swartout, the head instructor at RHS, it is the ‘’second year doing aqua team”.  Swartout goes on to say that “this year the Aqua team is studying the way that water flows from up in the mountains down through the neighborhood into the San Francisco Bay estuary, and into the Pacific Ocean.” According to Swartout, this year she plans on teaming up with Doria Richardson, the creator of the RHS garden and the program Urban Tilth, to improve the garden. Richardson  is currently the producer for Green Screen TV, she says now her job is to “meet with students all over CCcounty and Alameda doing good things for the environment.” Richardson states that, ”the RHS garden started years ago, the plan was to give students a green place of flowers, vegetables, fruits, and herbs. She continues saying, “some of the organizations that helped were Chevron which came and donated water pumps, electricity, and plumbing. And the California Conservation Corps came and bought pick axes, shovels, and helped dig to make the creek.” Student Tymichia Griffin, a RHS 12th grade student stated, “I love the aqua team, it makes me feel like my peers and I are doing the right thing by helping our community and earth. It keeps me busy and updated about what’s going on in my local environment. I’ve learned that a creek went through my neighborhood which is North Richmond.”

Hall of fame

Posted on 22nd March 2010 by chernandez in News, Sports

By Jeffrey Joseph Humble

Many people attended the black hall of fame ceremony held in Oakland on Friday March 19, 2010. There were bay area kids from several high schools. The reason why they had this event was to honor people that have worked hard in their careersand have become someone in their lives. Now they are trying to help others.

The first person elected to the hall of fame was Coach Ben Parks. He was a big time football coach, and is a role model of many different athletes in the NFL and around the world. He said “with out seeing kids and having friendships he wouldn’t be anything in this world.  To be someone you need friendship and loyalty.”

The next person was Pat Connolly. She was a member of the USA Olympian team in the 1960s. She also coached the track team at UCLA.

The next person that was nominated was Chris Burford. He had attended Oakland High school. He played football in his high school career; he made it to the NFL and played eight years in the NFL playing for the Chiefs and the Texans.

The next person was John Brodie. He played for the 49ers. He was a member of the 49ers for 13years. He also won a championship in those 13years that he played for the 49ers.

The last person that was inducted into the hall of fame was Willie Brown, who was a defense back for the Oakland Raiders. He played in many NFL pro bowls and was a member of the Oakland raiders for 11 years.

Danny McLane, a junior at Richmond High, asked how Willie Brown became so successful he stated “Hard work, dedication, and faith [in the lord] all helped me get to where I am now.”

Life or death is that the question

Posted on 15th March 2010 by vrodriguez in Poetry

By 2nd period – Expository Reading and Writing

Do you get more respect by suffering

Outrageous forturne hurts

Take control of your troubles

Kill them all

Death is painless

The heartaches of living and the pain that comes with it

Live through the bad to live through the good

You wish to die so you feel no more pain

In order to dream you need to be alive

What do you dream of  when you have no more life

When we die

When  you die you get more respect

A long life is difficult

Who would take the pain off of a long life

It’s hard to think of all the oppression in the world

The pain of love

The king is being  an ass

It takes patience to murder

My uncle should die instead of me

To kill or not to kill

Should I live with the burden of justice

Scared of  going  to  hell

Doesn’t know the journey to an afterlife

No matter what you won’t return

We pay for our sins and decisions

Live in the moment

Because we think of life and death we live in fear

The truth is then revealed

Feels sick just by thinking  of  it

Value your moments

With this thought I have fear

And cant reach it

Harvard offers free tuition to low-income students

From the Globe Education Desk

Harvard is offering free tuition for students whose family income is below $40,000, according to a spokesperson for the Ivy League university. The outreach  project is an effort to enroll more diverse students other than those from upper-income families. “Harvard University has announced that from low income families will pay no tuition” said  a statement from the president’s office. In making the announcement , Harvard President Lawerence H. Summers said,”When only 10 percent of the  students in elite higher education come from families  in the lower half of the  income distribution, weare not doing enough . We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution. Freedom is all I want

Posted on 10th March 2010 by brodriguez in Community and Information, Poetry

By Marlene Elizabeth Aguirre

Thick and curly tendrils am I.  Unruly and untamed.  I go every which way, in every direction, she says I am endlessly frustrating.  But I can’t help it.  It is my nature.  With fewer products I frizz up like an African lion’s mane.

Regal and poofy I see myself, but she sees me as crazy and uncontrollable.  I do not wish to be controlled however. I wish to be free flowing and soft.  That which I am, in my natural state.  But she doesn’t approve.

On windy days, it’s always a struggle.  She pushes and holds me down or hides me under hoodies.  I want to blow in the wind like the luscious green leaves on the trees.  But I am somehow tamed in knotty mess she thinks to be “better” for whom?  Not me.  I wish to be free.

When it’s sunny out I soak up all the suns steamy hot rays.  I bounce in glorious ways; every step she takes springs me to life.  And the compliments and envious glares flood from every person around us, I feel happy down to the root, I wish to be free, and when it’s sunny, she lets me.

On the other hand humid rainy days are a heartless battlefield of vicious combs and fingers that rake through me mercilessly.  She mumbles under her breath every possible insult, upset and frustrated she gets as I absorb the water in the environment and expand.  She wants me to calm down and behave.  I do not wish to do so though, I just wish to be free.

When he’s around her, I get a lot of attention.  She toys with my ends and flips me from side to side, incessantly.  I can hear her giggle and I laugh on the inside too, he makes her happy.  And I like him.  He agrees with me, he likes my regal lion’s mane and the way I am naturally.  He tells her to let me be free.  I of course, agree.

There are sometimes, when she feels shameful and sad, she feels isolated but I never abandon her.  Despite the innumerable amounts of product and sprays she has evened me out with, despite the unceasing demeaning insults and putdowns, I am here, and she is my friend.  And on those cold lonely days, I help her hide her insecurities behind a curtain of thick curly hair.  On these days, I am her friend, I am happy to the root, I am free.

Unforgettable

Posted on 5th March 2010 by scalderon in Poetry, Uncategorized - Tags: , ,

2656149865_55fa32b1d0

It seems unbelievable that such a thing could happen
Out of all the people we ask why you?
When will this pain end, when?

To us you were the dew,
To us you were a star,
A simple and radiant smile,
A bright ray of sunshine,
To us you were so much
That it is so hard to account for it all

It is so hard to think you are gone,
There was just so much,
So much for you to live,
For you to experience,
For you to gain,
“Why you?”, we ask

We all knew you or had seen you
And remember your bright smile
Your cheerful character
Your laugh
Your way of presenting yourself

Why must you leave us?
Why leave us to this eternal suffering?
To this unbelievable pain,
To this unbelievable confusion,
Why?

Don’t think this is something that will pass,
You will eternally be in our memory,
Forever and ever
Your life will not be forgotten,
And in every thought, you will  be there.
