Poetry Out Loud

Posted on 6th February 2010 by admin in Community and Information

By Veronica Rodriguez and Jeffery Humble

The event – POETRY OUT LOUD!  It was a well attended event and took place at Richmond High School (RHS) on Wednesday, January, 27, 2010 after school in the Student Center. Students competed by reciting poems in front of an audience of about 200 students, faculty, staff.  RHS conducts the competition a littler differently.  RHS English classes select a person to perform in the school competition and then the student is sent on to the county competition.  Other schools only select students directly from the classroom and don’t hold such a large school wide event.

According to www.poetryoutloud.org the program was developed by the Washington D.C organization, called the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.  All 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S, virgin Island and Puerto Rico participate.  Ms. Collins, an English teacher at RHS, said “This is a great event, it teaches students how to speak.”  Talking in front of people is a necessary and hard skill that students need for college.  Mr. Franco, RHS Principal, believes, “it helps people describe themselves in a different way; it builds character and gives people shot at doing something they are good at” Furthermore Ms. Ebony, another RHS teacher,  believes there “should be more opportunities for students to give presentations to show themselves”

Abel Pineda, the winner and RHS finalist from last year too, is headed for the county competition, “I’m very nervous because I heard most of the people that made it to regional last year have made it this year I know this is definitely going to be a competition, but then again, this would only be honest victory if I am able to beat those who won last year.”

The finalist will be performing this Sunday, February 7, 2010, in the county competition for Poetry Out Loud.  It is a national competition in the recitation of poetry.
