Summer@Brown
Over the course of this summer three of Richmond High School’s (RHS) students, Lucero Perez, Guadalupe Morales, and Selene Calderon, will spend two weeks in the East Coast touring colleges and attending Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Their experiences and those of three El Cerrito High School students also participating in the Women and Leadership course can be found at http://2010-ilc-at-brown.blogspot.com/. All six students post a daily blog describing their day, what they have done/learned, and what else might be on their mind. Come and see for yourself the experience that these students have been able to have through the help of the Ivy League Connection (ILC). On this site there are also links to the blogs of ILC students at other prestigious schools for the summer, also from the West Contra Costa Unified School District.
A story concerning the process that the RHS students went through in order to get this oppurtunity is also available at http://rhsnewswire.net/home/?p=530

Goodbye
Well it seems that we are here! End of the school year, time to make plans for the summer and look forward to next year. For the seniors it’s the end of their high school road, time to begin the rugged journey they call life. But for the rising seniors, juniors, and for the sophomores, there’s much more to come.
On Thursday June 10, 2010, the 09-10 year will be laid to rest. It’s been a long year, a ton a of laughs, a lot of cries, and many smiles. Richmond High School this year encountered and faced many difficult situations, nevertheless, it remains a very close community. Between the awful media attention that the school and the students had to endure, to the untimely deaths of numerous RHS students, the students and staff went through some of the most difficult of times -which only contributed to the an increment in unity and cooperation.
However, not only where there bad things but great ones as well! They constantly reminded everyone at RHS of the potential they have for a brighter future. Some students, for example, will have the opportunity to take their education to the next level, some will be receiving scholarships, and Richmond has seen its test scores rise to the top. As Lawrence Bridget, a rising senior, put it “ it was a good year even when it was a . . . disappointing at times.” In addition Bridget mentions- he looks [forward] to playing “football [next year]… and being a senior too!”
Every year it’s the same thing, tear filled goodbyes and a long summer break before the first day of a new year. As a junior myself, I can testify that it’s been a long couple of years, let alone this one by its self. Like all the other juniors I am “excited” about being a senior, but also a little scared. It has been hard, and sort of like an endless pit. But if nothing else these past years have been huge learning lessons. As much I hate to say it, this year is over, so until next year… Goodbye.

Aqua Team Update: The mural
Reporter: Olachi Obioma
On April 24, 2010, Richmond High’s “Tree Huggers”, originally known as the Aqua Team, painted a mural at the El Sobrante Public Library. It took the team three weeks to figure out what picture was going to be on the mural and what story they wanted to tell through it. According to Daisy Villalvazo, a member of Aqua Team, “the priming on the wall went so fast, in fact it only took an hour. When the mural is done it will represent the earth’s cycle and the books on the trees represent . . .always learn[ing] from mother earth.” From day one, the students worked very cordially. At certain points the only thing that the students could do was wait for the paint to dry. For example, when they applied the primer on the wall, they were forced to wait in order to continue their project. Afterwards, the students came back to trace the outline of the mural. On the second day they did the actual painting. Approximately 15 students painted for 4 hours and finished the mural. Lots of them said it was a great experience.
Baby Michael Canavan
Reporter: Selene Calderón
Recently, Michael Canavan, a Latin and ELD teacher at Richmond High School (RHS), became a father once again. Mr. Canavan already had three children from a previous marriage and this new baby boy is his fourth child and second son. He said he is “very happy” and glad about the baby’s arrival. The baby was born at the Kaiser in Oakland on March 31 at 4:30pm, weighing six pounds and five ounces. The baby came six weeks earlier than expected. According to Mr. Canavan his other children were “in shock” with the baby’s arrival and happy with the addition of a new member to their family. When Mr. Canavan and his wife learned that they were going to have a child, they decided that they would keep the baby’s gender a secret and await its birth to learn what it was. This is the reason they struggled to find the adequate name for the baby once they learned that the baby would be coming earlier than they had known. For much time after this, Mr. Canavan debated on what would be the most suitable name for his new baby. The name Michael came to him in a dream where he saw a friend of his whom he has not seen for long time. His friend’s name is Michael and so he saw it as a sign that that was the most suitable name for the baby. Furthermore, the baby was named James in honor of Mr. Canavan’s grandfather. Due to the fact Mr. Canavan’s name is also Michael, he says it has caused him a bit of confusion when his wife calls for Michael because he does not know whether she means him or the baby. Many people at RHS have seen pictures of the baby and like everyone Teresa L. Boardman, an English, Computer, and Journalism teacher, said “It is one of the most beautiful babies I have ever seen.”
Congratulations Mr. Canavan!
Aqua Team Update
Do you know what an estuary is ? It is a body of water made up of the combination of fresh water and salt water. Last Saturday, March 13, 2010 the Aqua Team went canoeing in the bay. While they were out canoeing they got to see the animals in the wetlands environment. According to a great number of the aqua team members it was a lot of fun. For members for whom it was the first time canoeing it was hard in the beginning but in the end it got easier as they got used to it. There were a total of three people per canoe the person in the back of the canoe was called the captain because they were in controll of the canoe. The other two people in the canoe simply just had to row the canoe. The animals that the group saw were crabs, ducks, fish, great egrets, etc. In addition, the students are currently in the process of creating a mural. It will be located at El Sobrante Public Library. The students have designed this mural working with a professional muralist named Eduardo Pueda. For more info stay tuned at rhs newswire.net
Aqua Team
Reporter: Olachi Obioma
There are many after school programs at Richmond High School (RHS) in which students engage in in order to help their community. One of these that many students have shown great interest for is the Aqua Team. When most people first hear about the program they thinks it is some sort of swim team, but it is not, in contrary it is a youth group that aims to learn more about the environment. This year, according to Chiara Swartout, the head instructor at RHS, it is the ‘’second year doing aqua team”. Swartout goes on to say that “this year the Aqua team is studying the way that water flows from up in the mountains down through the neighborhood into the San Francisco Bay estuary, and into the Pacific Ocean.” According to Swartout, this year she plans on teaming up with Doria Richardson, the creator of the RHS garden and the program Urban Tilth, to improve the garden. Richardson is currently the producer for Green Screen TV, she says now her job is to “meet with students all over CCcounty and Alameda doing good things for the environment.” Richardson states that, ”the RHS garden started years ago, the plan was to give students a green place of flowers, vegetables, fruits, and herbs. She continues saying, “some of the organizations that helped were Chevron which came and donated water pumps, electricity, and plumbing. And the California Conservation Corps came and bought pick axes, shovels, and helped dig to make the creek.” Student Tymichia Griffin, a RHS 12th grade student stated, “I love the aqua team, it makes me feel like my peers and I are doing the right thing by helping our community and earth. It keeps me busy and updated about what’s going on in my local environment. I’ve learned that a creek went through my neighborhood which is North Richmond.”
